Have you flown on an airplane lately? Are there any military bases in your state? Have you ever received a federal tax refund? Have you driven on an Interstate lately? So why is this the government’s responsibility and not yours? But I think this same understanding extends to most aspects of life.

I think what she was referring to was how the Not Today Heifer Not My Pasture Not My Bullshit Flower Version2 – T-shirts is punitive rather than rehabilitative. We put them in jail and forget about them. It costs tons less to rehabilitate than incarcerate. I worked with a teacher whose son worked for them. She did and probably still does lots of volunteer work. It’s an awesome organization! I agree with you to a degree but these people generally don’t trust government institutions. I think that is why Homeboys has helped as many people as they have. They don’t have the fear that the stigma of government can cause. I do believe the government should help fund important resources like Homeboys with a proven record of success. Just my opinion. How could they not when they are able to build so many jails and prisons? They are so damn effective and building jails and prisons why can’t that same money and effort be put in building up the community?
