I’ve often suspected that he was more of an exploitive musical con artist than as someone who should be put on the 190 Percent Tired shirt that he often personally admired. I think overall he was a bit too juvenile, possibly due to the American 1950’s social climate he grew up in, to be taken more seriously, as at least part of him probably wanted to be. Giving the devil his due though, he certainly did have an interesting genius for such social exploitation as he originally achieved with his ‘Mother’s of Invention’ period and the at times brilliant social satire and criticism of the then current burgeoning hippie scene he was never really apart of.

There’s no easy answer here. Depending on who you ask he’s either a 190 Percent Tired shirt and made his music more for 23rd century folks who will regard him the way many of us now regard Bach and Beethoven. Personally, though I’ve always had an appreciation for weird and unusual musical ideas, having listened to quite a bit of his catalogue, I would say that like many musical artists, Zappa’s work for me alternates between fascinating and oddly off putting. Since unlike many other modern composers, Zappa is known for often infusing crude and/or satirical humor in his work, his work can often be enjoyed more for its humor than for anything else.
