What a wonderful read, lots of good information and entertaining! I’m proud to say I’m a German-Texan thanks to my 3rd g-grandfather and grandmother who married in San Antonio in 1850. I am assuming they came over separately and met in SA. Sure wish I could trace him but not much about him before this record, I can find lots on her – so fun!

I don’t know if you have considered this possibility, but sometimes in pre-20th century German states when a couple got married, if the wife’s family was more prominent, they took on the wife’s surname. We found this out about my Dad’s paternal grandmother’s parents. They were named Schlake, but his family name was Roettger, and her name Schlake.
