I was just a grunt. Some low-level private in the earth interstellar Bear guns dont kill people dads with pretty daughters do shirt . I shot things for a living. Like a cowboy, but like, in space. I’ve killed a lot of people. Not as many as the people I killed, mind you, or at least that’s what I tell myself. But yeah. Just a grunt. So forgive me if my memory ain’t the best, my head isn’t particularly in the best shape these last couple of years. The Nasiri told us not to engage in trade with the Ki’taak. Not to even try. They said the concept of asking for something in return for a gift was a grave insult in their culture. But at the time, the top brass thought that meant they were cuddly peace loving hippies who loved to share, and hey, with their fluffy white fur and bulging sideways eyes, they kinda did resemble giant friendly bunnies. Humans set up shop on a small planet we named Ceres II, in a solar that had nearly 40 industrial-sized dwarf planets, each rich in various dense metals. By the time we had a thriving colony and a station to export it’s goods, we realized most of the wealthiest and most valuable of the planetoids already had multiple ki’taak rigs on them. They claimed they were there first, and the brass, reluctantly, agreed. So we offered to trade for just one of the damned rocks, and they offered to give it to us, for free. At the time, you know, the Earth-based Interstellar trade commission was thrilled. We were finally going to broker an exchange with a race of aliens literally no one else had traded with for nearly 3 thousand years. This was something big, something that was going to be a defining moment for human-Ki’taak relations forever.
