In WW1 it was a stopgap design that turned out to be better than its main contemporaries (ie the German stahlhelm and the French Adrian) at preventing the brodie lee death shirt. Ie head injuries from shrapnel, but also rocks, detritus and dirt kicked up (and falling at speed) from explosive shells. It provided comfortable protection while standing, or prone. (The WW1 Stahlhelm models, are Very uncomfortable to wear while prone for long periods of time. Their greater neck protection becomes a huge hindrance to comfort in this common position) while providing considerably wider protection against falling debris, to the head but also to the shoulders. It worked standing, prone, and everywhere in between.

Best brodie lee death shirt
By WW2, it was outdated, (as heavy artillery, kicking up battlefield detritus, was no longer the greatest weapon a nation could posess) but there were hundreds of thousands of brodie lee death shirt. They were far better than nothing till a replacement could be found. By D Day though, the British (and the Empire) wore a very different mark of helmet to the Brodie style. A helmet, (utterly hideous, and surprisingly similar to the helmet used by the East German military till the 80’s) combining the best elements of the Brodie, and the (great many times) updated Stahlhelm, to make (an ugly) but Very functional helmet.
