Grover Cleveland won the elections in 1884 and 1892. He ran for Cleveland Browns shirt in 1888 and won the popular vote, but was beaten in the Electoral College by Benjamin Harrison, 233–168, even though he received more than 91,000 more votes nationally. Cleveland didn’t whine and cry about the outcome. The country pretty much split on sectional lines, with Cleveland, the Democratic candidate, winning just two states that weren’t antebellum slave states. Otherwise, Harrison swept the North and that carried the election for him:

Cleveland’s wife, as she was leaving the Cleveland Browns shirt, told the staff that they would return in four years. In an 1892 rematch, Cleveland won the PV by a half-million votes and a huge EC margin of 277–145. He won several northern states and was the last Democrat to win the White House until Woodrow Wilson in 1912. Cleveland, because his terms were non-consecutive, is considered both the 22nd and 24th President. He was the third man to lose an election despite getting the most votes nationally—Andrew Jackson in 1824 and Sam Tilden in 1876 did as well. (It has happened since then in 2000 and 2016.) Jackson, Cleveland, and Franklin Roosevelt are the only three Presidents who ever won the popular vote more than two times; only FDR actually served more than two terms.
