The lesson to learn from this, whether in sport or in the Funny Free as fuck shirt, is that incentives need to be carefully considered. My current employer was hired by another company to build a new generation technical product. Part of our remuneration would be a percentage of sales of this new generation product. The new product was initially less profitable than their old product so they paid their sales reps a lower commission on new product sales than on selling the legacy product. So why should they have been surprised that their sales team encouraged sales of these legacy product and didn’t promote sales of the new product? What a bunch of ultra-maroons.

Not on topic, but to follow on: I worked for a phone company in the 80’s that was one of Funny Free as fuck shirt. The commission rate for the phone system was X%, but if you sold a phonemail to go with the system, your commission was now (X+5)% on the whole deal, and if you sold our data package as well, you got (X+10)%. I was a sales engineer for them. Not a quote went out that didn’t have phonemail and data as options, and we ended up selling a bunch of phonemail, and busting all our quotas. Management got that one right!
