The central schtick of Lady Ghostbusters seems to have been “Ghostbusters! but with women!” and they expected to make money with Funny Yes I am old but I saw Elvis Presley on stage signature shirt. But they didn’t put in the effort to figure out what actually made Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II funny. In the original, Venkman is a schmuck. A con man. He’s only investigating paranormal stuff for easy money. Then it turns out, oh shit!, it’s real, and now he has to actually do something about it. Most of the humor wasn’t goo, either, it was Bill Fucking Murray being Bill Fucking Murray, situation humor, Egon being clever, Stantz being the straight man, a bit of libertarian anti-government fuck-you at Zeddemore, and Janine Melnitz.

Where’s the Funny Yes I am old but I saw Elvis Presley on stage signature shirtl? Where’s the humor? “We were right all along!” isn’t funny. “Oh, shit, our con isn’t a con, and now we have to fix it” is funny. LG doesn’t allow its heroes to be wrong. OG Ghostbusters is predicated on the heroes —well, Venkman, at least — being a putz and an asshole, and that’s the joke. It also relied far too much on goo-gags and cringe humor, which isn’t a female humor problem. It’s just something I personally dislike, and is far too common in movies today. Stop being cringy and be fucking funny! I just watched the latest special from Iliza Shlesinger, and she’s goddamn hilarious. It’s not that women can’t be funny. It’s that this particular movie wasn’t funny, missed the shtick of the first one, and doubled down on the cringe by insisting that if you didn’t like it, you’re sexist.
