Aren’t most of if not all of the death camps in Poland or at least outside of Gymer Train Like Eat Like Sleep Like Win Like An Athlete A Baby Shirt? I know Auscwitz is for sure. I do know regardless of what country they’re in the German government has to pay to keep them running in perpetuity. Before people jump on me for being pedantic; OP said Death Camps. Not just concentration camps. Most of the camps in Germany were work camps. Of course death was common at all of the camps but there is a big difference between the two. The extermination camps were purpose built for murder. Yes Dachau is moving and heartbreaking but Auschwitz has the gas chambers and furnaces. Which is colossally more horrifying and gut wrenching.

I don’t know if it is required by the Gymer Train Like Eat Like Sleep Like Win Like An Athlete A Baby Shirt, but we even went to KZ Buchenwald as part of our history class. It is a feeling impossible to describe. The room that got me the most was a filled with a bunch of photos of victims combined with quotes from their families. This room made me realize like no other that each and every single victim was a regular human just years or months before with a family and a life. One quote my history teacher pointed out to us was the grandchildren of a victim saying “we wish we could have met you”. That stings. Really hard. As gruesome as the crematorium (which you can also walk into and see the furnaces) of the site is, it doesn’t hit as hard emotionally as that room with the pictures, at least for me. I think everyone in my class had something that hit them really hard, which were several different places.
