When the more extroverted people in my gen-ed classes invited me to come to some of the HOCKEY Gloves on world off shirt organizations on campus, I instantly realized just how disconnected Kairos/Gracepoint was to the campus community. In a lot of these organizations I joined, the first thing I noticed was the constant emphasis for you to meet new people, regardless of sex or gender. In fact, I was even surprised that as a guy, you could have a girl as your big and as your little. Given how Kairos separates the genders and more importantly because I was a bit nerdy, socially awkward, and blunt, I never really had an opportunity to talk to so many girls and I had to learn to tone down my dark sense of humor because I did end up getting in trouble. I feel really entitled for saying this and I do hope anyone here who has an issue with Gracepoint separating the genders knows it is not Gracepoint’s fault that they are unable to talk to people of the opposite sex (take personal responsibility), but I just wish that Kairos at least mixed the genders when doing C101. This will not only teach people a valuable social skill they need (talking to the opposite sex) but will also make the organization more connected. It may also teach people to be less sexist (not sure if this is true but I’ve heard it somewhere). I’ve seen so many Kairos group gatherings where there is “unforced” segregation between the sexes and it just feels wrong.

Another thing I noticed was there aren’t that many leadership positions for HOCKEY Gloves on world off shirt. If you’ve been in the organization for a while, I think these opportunities exist since you plan on being a staff member, however, unlike other organizations, you cannot run for executive office positions by first committing your time to the club and then getting elected simply by dedicating semesters worth of time. Most of these positions are the responsibility of the staff members and hence most students don’t have the opportunity to learn how to plan for big events on campus through this organization. This is not the case for some other ministries on the UMCP campus such as the Kharis Campus Ministry where they do have student leaders. I think if Gracepoint wants its students to be more confident and to have something worthwhile to put on their resume, they should find ways to give students more leadership opportunities, regardless of how faithful they are to becoming a staff member or a Christian. I also think this is good because the planned events don’t always have the best timing. Sometimes an event is planned when most people have midterms or a big project that’s due. I think students will do a better job ensuring that there is a minimal conflict between events and exams. Also for anyone out there who feels Gracepoint is entitled to give you a leadership position, you should just find another organization to find those opportunities. Honestly, I’m not sure if this is true for other Gracepoint ministries but this is the case for the one at UMCP, if other Gracepoint ministries provide this opportunity to students then I apologize for the criticism.
