At one point I had told the lactation consultant that I was trying my best to just nurse through the pain and she disapprovingly shook her I ain’t perfect but I can still go fishing old man close enough shirt and scolded, “No, you don’t want to be a martyr.” And I felt embarrassed for thinking that I could make progress that way. And everything I read said, “It shouldn’t hurt!..If it hurts, unlatch and start over…”. I’m here to say, eff that! Of course it’s going to hurt! Good latch or not, having your tits sucked raw all day every day is going to hurt to some extent and I basically had to build up nipple callouses to be able to handle it long term. For me, the only way out was through.
I no longer dread breastfeeding, I enjoy it, I love it and eagerly look forward to it on the nights I wake up before my baby does. And it’s still possible I’ll continue to combo feed even if only on the occasional day I want my husband to take over so I can sleep a couple hours more in the morning. But I feel so proud and empowered knowing that I can exclusively breastfeed now. I’ve been dying to make my own “it gets better” post and I really hope my story is helpful for other moms out there who are desperate to make breastfeeding work but totally out of ideas. Maybe what I’ve done won’t work for everyone, but maybe it’ll work for someone. So if you’re someone, here’s your encouragement – It does get better! The way I got here was hard but worth it.

Great work, mama! It’s hard! Also, you’re right about the pain — the first 2-3 weeks hurt no matter what because your nips are building up I ain’t perfect but I can still go fishing old man close enough shirt, and I’m saying this after 2 nurslings. Regarding nursing with bigger boobs and no pillow, switching to the cradle hold (check Google for images) helped me transition away from the My Brest Friend pillow with my daughter. BUT I didn’t do it until about 4 months and I still use all the pillows at home. I used an inflatable My Brest Friend in public settings prior. My son is almost 4, and I can’t remember exactly how I transitioned away from the nursing pillow, but it was also at around 4 months. Try different positions to see what works. Also, as a fellow big breasted mama, check out Ripe brand nursing tanks — way more support than every other brand I’ve checked out and not as sweaty hot as the synthetic Kindred Bravely tanks.
