We’re apex I Get My Attitude From My Freaking Awesome Mom Funny Gifts T-Shirt and as such, we emit a kind of ammonia-like reek. Other predators can smell it too, which is why some dogs will bite for no apparent reason. We also emit that reek when we’re afraid or around something strange and…well, alien. Which pretty much describes Vulcans, doesn’t it, no matter how attractive they might be? (Exogamy is a topic for a different discussion, if you please. Not goin’ there today!)

Vulcans don’t sweat nearly as much as humans. They can’t; their I Get My Attitude From My Freaking Awesome Mom Funny Gifts T-Shirt is hot and arid; almost bone dry. They retain internal moisture like few other species in the galaxy—which is one reason why they’re so damned hard to kill. Their body cooling processes are nearly consciously controlled and it’s one of the things Vulcan children are taught before they’re sent out into the desert for the first of their endurance training sessions. (Childhood on Vulcan is tough.) On the other hand, humans sweat a lot, some of us quite copiously. Sweat is the product of apocrine glands embedded in our skin and those glands also emit pheromones—which are unobtrusive to us (remember the Koreans?) but a Vulcan can smell it immediately. Vulcans don’t sweat and they don’t emit pheromones—except during pon farr—a result of living in a hostile environment where a predator can smell them easily if the breeze is right. A lion can smell a human from nearly a mile away. Truth! Even a dog can easily pick up our scent. Wanna know why some human sweat smells so bad? Bacteria on the skin. The micro-bugs cluster around the base of the hairs on the skin and when the salty sweat reacts with dying bacteria, the result is that which makes commuting in a packed subway car or bus really unpleasant if someone forgot to bathe or put on deodorant that morning. Again, most folks aren’t aware of it in themselves—can you smell your upper lip?—but others sure are! (Yes, I know that some folks can smell their own BO if they’ve gone a while without a shower and that’s a Very Good Thing, isn’t it?) But some folks—homeless people, for example—can’t shower or bathe and they’re usually not consciously aware of how they smell. They’ve gotten used to it, in other words.
