When I got my MLIS, I went in completely blind and Librarian Book Pain Syndrome Tee Shirts. I just knew I had really enjoyed working in my school library and my art history BA was basically toilet paper. I found archiving my first semester of the program, did several internships on top of working and night classes (I drank a lot of Red Bull), and got hired as a Lead Archivist in the corporate world two months shy of graduation. I also accrued a ton of student loan debt which I’m only saying goodbye to now, 8 years after graduation. I made $60k out of grad school in NYC, which was kind of meh but I had a great work-life balance and got to run the show.

I would 100% advise doing a cheap course if you aren’t going to be in a Librarian Book Pain Syndrome Tee Shirts. However, I got all of my internships and my first full-time job from alumni recognizing the school name/program. NYC has a glut of MLIS graduates so the “prestige” of my program name and the places I’d been able to intern at, in my opinion, are what set me up to succeed. I left the states after 2016 because my husband is Aussie and we figured the US was a bit cooked at that point. I’d love to come back but life there is just so needlessly difficult.
