The same thing happened to my sister in law. She was from a German family in Boerne and when she married my non-German brother her father practically disowned her… Even though the wedding took place 1 block from his home, he refused to go and would not let his wife go. He said that my brother would never amount to anything. The day my brother graduated from the DPS academy he went to their house and knocked on the door. When the old man answered the door, my brother showed him the DPS badge and asked him if that amounted to anything.

When my dad brought my “English” mom to visit his parents in 1964, they were a little wary of her, and very critical. My grandmother even commented to my grandfather in German on how short my mom’s skirt was. Unfortunately, my dad, who had learned no German, having grown up after the war, had forgotten to tell my Grandmother that my mom had taken German in high school. It turned out to be an icebreaker, and eventually the family accepted her. But that was 1964. It was a lot more different in earlier years.
