And presumably the first martial traditions in the US were practice among the indigenous people, and are not easy to date (and I would be very interested if anyone could point me to any reliable information on indigenous fighting traditions).

Indeed, the Marine hand to hand fighting system during World War 2 was based on Jujitsu. That is not to say, however, that they were widely known of, or that you could easily find someone to teach you in most places in America.
