This breaks my heart every time I hear this saying…. As a child growing up, I heard it multiple times. It was usually used as an excuse for a Things I do in my spare time go Tigers watch Clemson research Clemson shirt. Lay over a folding chair and receive lashes with a device (switch, spoon, belt) until my parent was satisfied that I received what I deserved for my “sins”. This “cleansed” me until I met the sin threshold, and yet again received the rod. However, being the defiant child I was, I learned nothing from this education. Rather, it taught me to not show a reaction to pain and exert my control over all situations to receive yet another “lesson”. In addition to my defiance, I also wanted to understand this biblical reference. Seriously, what kind of “loving” god would ever approve of subjecting his children to this type of punishment. The first thing I learned is that this IS NOT a Things I do in my spare time go Tigers watch Clemson research Clemson shirt.. It is a quote from a poem. There is a passage in the Bible that says something along the line that a parent who does not use his rod does not love his child; however, this is not the same thing!!! Secondly, the rod in the Bible refers to a shepherd’s hook. They used this to guide their flock when they ventured out too far. They also used it to pull their flock from crevices when they fell in between the rocks. As I said above, this saying breaks my heart. It is gentle guiding, caring, and having a watchful eye that is necessary to raise children. Nothing has changed over the years, just the tools.
